3.5L EcoBoost® Engine

The 3.5L EcoBoost ® combines turbocharging and direct injection. It generates best-in-class 365 V6 horsepower plus 350 lb.-ft. of torque. This EcoBoost is standard in the Explorer Sport and Platinum, which also feature standard Intelligent 4WD with the Terrain Management System™plus Hill Descent Control.™

2.3L EcoBoost® Engine

A powerful 2.3L EcoBoost® engine delivers 280 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. And it’s available with 4WD and the Class II Trailer Tow Package.

3.5L Ti-VCT V6 Engine

The 3.5L Ti-VCT (twin independent variable camshaft timing) V6 delivers 290 horsepower and 255 lb.-ft. of torque. With its variable control of valve cam timing, Ti-VCT can optimize performance across the entire low, mid and high ranges of the power band to match the driving conditions.

Towing and Trailer Sway Control

Building on AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control,™ the standard trailer sway control selectively brakes and adjusts engine power to maintain trailer control.

The result is stability and control, even when towing large loads.

When properly equipped the Explorer can tow up to 5,000 lbs.

The Class III Trailer Tow Package, required for towing, is available for the 3.5L TiVCT engine, and comes standard with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine.

Curve Control

Curve Control will slow you down as much as 10 mph in approximately one second when it senses that you’re going too fast for a particular curve. Employing throttle reduction and four-wheel braking, it’s always active in helping you maintain control around curves. Also, it functions on dry or wet pavement and is particularly useful when you’re entering or exiting freeway off- or on-ramps too fast. Curve Control, standard on all Explorer models, is an enhancement to AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control.

Six-Speed SelectShift® Automatic Transmission

Explorer comes standard with a six-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission. Available on Explorer Sport and Platinum are steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, so you can easily and quickly change gears.

Terrain Management System

Come snow, gravel, sand or grass, you’ll be ready. The Terrain Management System has four settings for you to choose from depending on the road or path you travel.
